Most people choose a paint color and stop there. The finish gets an afterthought, if it gets a thought at all. That is a mistake, because sheen is not just a look. It is a functional decision that affects how a surface holds up, how easy it is to clean, and how forgiving it is of everyday wear.
Here is a breakdown of each finish, what it actually does, and how to think through the decision room by room.
Sheen Is a Functional Choice, Not Just a Look
Sheen refers to how much light a paint finish reflects once it is fully cured. Lower sheens absorb more light. Higher sheens reflect more of it. That difference shapes the appearance of a room, but it also determines durability, cleanability, and how well a surface hides or highlights imperfections.
In practice, this means the "right" sheen depends on how a space is actually used, not just how you want it to look.
| Finish | Reflectivity | Durability | Cleanability | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flat/Matte | Low | Lower | Difficult to wipe clean | Ceilings, low-traffic spaces |
| Eggshell | Soft glow | Moderate | Cleans reasonably well | Living rooms, dining rooms, hallways |
| Satin | Moderate | High | Wipes clean easily | Kitchens, bathrooms, high-traffic walls |
| Semi-Gloss | High | Very high | Wipes clean with minimal effort | Trim, doors, cabinets |
| Gloss | Maximum | Very high | Wipes clean easily | Furniture, accents, statement trim |
Flat and Matte
Flat and matte finishes have the lowest reflectivity of the group. Because they absorb light rather than bounce it, they conceal surface imperfections better than any other finish. That makes them a good functional fit for ceilings and older walls that have seen some settling over the years.
The tradeoff is durability. Flat finishes do not hold up to scrubbing or repeated contact, so they are not a good functional fit for rooms that get touched, bumped, or wiped down often, regardless of how the color looks on the wall.
Eggshell
Eggshell has a soft glow, just enough sheen to catch light without looking shiny. Functionally, it sits between flat and satin. It holds up to light handling and cleans better than flat, which is why it works well in living rooms, dining rooms, and hallways where the walls see moderate use but are not being constantly touched.
Satin
Satin is the finish we recommend most often for walls in a working home, and the reasoning is functional as much as aesthetic. It holds up well to daily wear and wipes clean with minimal effort, which is exactly what kitchens, bathrooms, and high-traffic walls need.
If you are only picking one finish for the bulk of your home, satin is usually the right default. It gives you a finish that performs under regular use without needing the higher sheen of semi-gloss.
Semi-Gloss
Semi-gloss is built for surfaces that get handled constantly. Trim, doors, and cabinets take daily contact from hands, bags, and furniture, and semi-gloss wipes clean with almost no effort, which keeps those surfaces looking sharp over time.
The higher reflectivity does mean surface prep matters more here. Any imperfection in the substrate will show more on semi-gloss than it would on a lower sheen.
Gloss
Gloss sits at the top of the durability and reflectivity scale. It is the most resistant to wear and the easiest to wipe clean, which is part of why it works well on furniture, accents, and statement trim.
It is rarely the right functional choice for full walls. The same reflectivity that makes it durable and easy to clean on smaller surfaces will show every flaw on a larger one.
