  • Test colours in large swatches on the actual wall before committing
  • Consider the fixed elements — roof, stone, brick — before choosing a palette
  • Lighter colours make a home look larger; darker colours add drama and definition
  • The 60-30-10 rule: 60% main colour, 30% secondary, 10% accent
  • Always view colours in both natural daylight and evening light before deciding

Choosing an exterior paint colour is one of the most visible decisions you will make for your home. Unlike interior paint, exterior colour is seen by everyone — neighbours, guests, and potential buyers. Getting it right adds curb appeal and value; getting it wrong means living with a mistake for years.

Start With the Fixed Elements

Before you look at a single paint chip, identify the elements you cannot change: the roof colour, any brick or stone, the driveway material, and the landscaping. These fixed elements set the tone for your entire palette. A warm-toned roof calls for warm body colours; a cool grey roof pairs naturally with blues, greens, and cool neutrals.

The 60-30-10 Rule for Exterior Colour

Professional painters use the 60-30-10 rule as a starting framework. The main body colour covers about 60% of the exterior — siding and walls. The secondary colour covers about 30% — trim, fascia, and window frames. The accent colour covers about 10% — front door, shutters, and decorative details. This ratio creates visual balance without making the home look flat or chaotic.

Test Before You Commit

Paint chips are notoriously misleading. The small square on a chip looks completely different at full scale on a wall, in different lighting conditions, and next to your actual trim and roof. Always buy sample pots and paint at least 12-inch by 12-inch swatches directly on the wall. Live with them for 48 hours and observe them in morning light, afternoon sun, and evening shade before making a final decision.

Popular Exterior Colour Palettes for Vancouver Homes

  • Classic white with black trim: timeless, works on any architectural style, always resells well
  • Warm grey with white trim and navy door: modern, sophisticated, popular on craftsman and contemporary homes
  • Deep charcoal with warm white trim: dramatic, high-contrast, excellent on two-storey homes
  • Sage green with cream trim: natural, organic, blends beautifully with West Coast landscaping
  • Navy blue with white trim and brass accents: bold, confident, increasingly popular on character homes
