Salt Spring Island, BC

I bought a home on Salt Spring this year. Within a month I was walking the island looking at siding the way only a painter does.

Salt Spring homes take a beating. Salt air, long wet winters, moss in the shade and hard sun on the decks. Getting a painting project done right here takes more planning than it does in town.

Here's what I'd want any island homeowner to know before they paint.

  • Moisture is the main enemy of paint and stain on the island. Most failures start there.
  • Wood siding, cedar and decks need a different plan than painted stucco or Hardie board.
  • The dry summer window is short. Exterior projects book up early.
  • Prep is where a good paint job is won or lost. Ask exactly what prep is included.
  • Hire a painter who is insured, puts the scope in writing and backs the work with a warranty.

1. What island weather does to paint and stain

Salt Spring is drier in summer than Vancouver, but winters are long, grey and wet. Water is what breaks paint down. It gets behind the film through failed caulking, bare wood and cracks, then lifts the coating from underneath.

North-facing walls and anything under the trees stay damp for months. That's where you'll see moss, mildew and green staining first. South and west walls get the opposite problem: summer sun bakes the finish until it fades, chalks and cracks.

Homes close to the water also deal with salt air, which speeds up wear on trim, railings and metal.

None of this means paint won't last here. It means the prep has to be done properly, and the products have to suit the exposure.

2. Wood homes need a different plan

A lot of island homes are wood. Cedar siding, board and batten, timber accents, big decks. Wood moves with the moisture, so it needs a coating that can move with it.

Three questions decide the plan:

Paint or stain? Paint builds a thicker film and generally lasts longer. Stain lets the wood grain show but needs more frequent maintenance, especially on decks.

Re-coat or restore? If the existing finish is still bonded, a clean, light sand and fresh coats may be enough. If it's peeling, grey or black with mildew, the wood may need to be sanded back to bare before anything goes on.

What's underneath? Soft or rotten boards need to be replaced before painting. Painting over rot only hides it for a season.

3. When to paint on Salt Spring

Exterior paint and stain need dry surfaces and mild temperatures to cure properly. On the island, that usually means late spring through early fall.

That window is short, and everyone wants it. If you're planning an exterior project for next summer, book your estimate in the fall or winter. You'll get a better choice of dates, and there's time to plan colours and scope without rushing.

Interior projects are different. They can be done any time of year, which makes the wet months a good time to tackle cabinets, walls and trim.

4. The island factor

Painting on an island isn't the same as painting in town. A lot of trades come over on the ferry, and one missed sailing can cost a day.

Our Salt Spring crew lives on the island. When we say we'll be there Monday at 8, we're already here.

What matters to you as a homeowner is simple. Your painter should show up when they said they would, keep you updated every day they're on site, and finish what they started before moving on. At Colour Craft, our standard is to deliver what we promise.

5. Questions to ask any painter on the island

Before you hire anyone, ask:

  • Are you insured, and do you have WCB coverage? We carry $5 million in liability insurance and full WCB coverage.
  • Will I get a written scope? Every Colour Craft project starts with an on-site walkthrough and a detailed written estimate. No surprises on price or timeline.
  • What prep is included? Washing, scraping, sanding, caulking, priming and protecting your property. Get it in writing.
  • What products will you use? We use premium Sherwin-Williams coatings matched to the surface and exposure.
  • Is there a warranty? Every project we do is backed by a 2-year written warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Do you paint on the other Gulf Islands?

Yes. We serve Salt Spring Island, Pender, Galiano and Mayne, and we work in Victoria too.

Can you paint over moss or mildew?

No. It has to be cleaned and treated first, or it comes back through the new paint.

When should I book an exterior project?

As early as you can. The dry season is short, and the best dates go first. Fall and winter are a good time to get your estimate done.

Do you charge for estimates?

No. Estimates are free and come with no obligation.
