The Project

This Garibaldi Highlands home in Squamish had a dark chocolate brown HardiBoard and wood siding that had been in place for years. The homeowner, Matt, wanted a bold transformation — something that would stand out in the neighbourhood and complement the mountain backdrop that defines Garibaldi Highlands. The result: a striking slate blue with crisp white trim and a freshly stained cedar deck.

The project covered every exterior surface: HardiBoard siding, wood siding, fascia, decks, doors, window frames, and door frames. Each surface required a different product approach. The HardiBoard and wood siding received Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint Flat — chosen for its exceptional coverage and hide on fibre cement and wood surfaces. The fascia was coated with Duration Satin for its premium durability and moisture resistance. The cedar decks were treated with Sikkens Cetol 1 SRD — a penetrating oil-based stain that protects and enhances the natural wood grain.

The main challenge on this project was the condition of the existing siding. The HardiBoard and wood siding were heavily weathered and faded — years of UV exposure and moisture had broken down the surface significantly. Going from a dark chocolate brown to a bold slate blue also meant the colour change was dramatic, which required two full, thick coats of SuperPaint Flat to achieve complete coverage without any bleed-through of the original colour. Proper surface preparation — thorough cleaning, spot priming of bare areas, and careful masking — was essential before any paint was applied.

The transformation from dark brown to slate blue is dramatic and immediate. The white trim pops against the new siding colour, and the warm cedar deck stain provides a natural contrast that ties the whole exterior together. This is the kind of result that gets noticed on the street — and generates calls from the neighbours.

Products Used

Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint Flat ↗— HardiBoard & Wood Siding

SuperPaint Flat provides outstanding coverage and hide on HardiBoard fibre cement and wood siding. Its flat finish minimizes surface imperfections and delivers a clean, uniform appearance. SuperPaint's advanced formula resists mildew and fading — critical for Squamish's wet coastal climate.

Sherwin-Williams Duration Satin ↗— Fascia

Duration Exterior is Sherwin-Williams' premium exterior coating — chosen for fascia where durability and moisture resistance are paramount. Its self-priming formula provides exceptional adhesion, and the satin sheen gives fascia boards a clean, finished look that holds up against Squamish's heavy rainfall.

Sikkens Cetol 1 SRD ↗— Cedar Decks

Sikkens Cetol 1 SRD is a penetrating oil-based deck stain that deeply conditions and protects cedar wood while enhancing its natural grain and warmth. Unlike film-forming products that peel and crack, Cetol 1 SRD penetrates the wood fibres for long-term protection against UV, moisture, and foot traffic. It's our preferred product for cedar decks in the Sea-to-Sky corridor.

“The transformation is incredible. The blue looks amazing against the mountains and the deck stain is exactly what we wanted. The crew was professional, on time, and the job site was spotless every day. We couldn't be happier.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Squamish's wet climate affect exterior paint?+
Squamish receives over 2,000mm of rainfall annually — one of the highest in BC. This means exterior paint must be applied to properly prepared, dry surfaces and must be a premium product with excellent moisture resistance. We use Sherwin-Williams Duration and SuperPaint lines specifically because of their advanced moisture protection. Prep work is non-negotiable in Squamish: any failing paint, gaps, or exposed wood will absorb water and cause the new coating to fail within a season.
What time of year is best to paint a home exterior in Squamish?+
Late spring through early fall (May through September) is the ideal window for exterior painting in Squamish. We need temperatures above 10°C and at least 48 hours of dry weather after application. July and August offer the most reliable conditions. We do not recommend exterior painting in November through March due to the high rainfall and temperature fluctuations that prevent proper curing.
How long will exterior paint last in the Sea-to-Sky corridor?+
With premium products and proper prep, exterior paint on a Squamish or Whistler home typically lasts 7–10 years. Homes with significant sun exposure on south-facing walls, or those with cedar siding that wasn't properly primed, may need attention at 6–8 years. Our 2-year workmanship warranty covers any adhesion or application failures within the first two years.
Do you work in Whistler, Pemberton, and Brackendale as well as Squamish?+
Yes — Colour Craft Painting's Sea-to-Sky franchise covers the entire corridor from Squamish through Brackendale, Garibaldi Highlands, Britannia Beach, Whistler, and Pemberton. We regularly work on homes throughout the Sea-to-Sky region and are familiar with the specific challenges each area presents.
How do you handle difficult access on multi-storey homes in Garibaldi Highlands?+
Many homes in Garibaldi Highlands and Brackendale are built on sloped terrain with challenging ladder placements. Our crew is trained and equipped for difficult access situations — we use 40-foot extension ladders, pump jacks, and where required, boom lifts. We assess every access challenge during the estimate and price accordingly so there are no surprises on the job.
