The Project

This stunning modern home in Squamish had beautiful cedar siding, a cedar garage door, and cedar ceiling panels — but years of coastal weather had taken their toll. The wood had turned grey and dull, losing the warm, rich tones that made the home's architecture so striking.

The homeowner wanted a full restoration — not just a fresh coat of stain over the damage, but a proper, professional-grade process that would bring the cedar back to life and protect it for years to come.

Our team completed a full sand-down to bare wood across all cedar surfaces: the vertical siding panels, the garage door, the ceiling soffits, and the balcony railings. This is the most critical step in any wood restoration — removing the old, failed coating and any grey oxidation to expose fresh, clean wood that can properly absorb the new stain.

We applied Sikkens Cetol 1 (available through Rona and Benjamin Moore dealers) — a premium oil-based penetrating stain specifically engineered for cedar in coastal climates. The result is the warm, honey-amber tone you see in the after photos. The wood grain is visible, the colour is even and deep, and the protection will last years longer than a surface-only application.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Squamish's wet climate affect exterior paint?+
Squamish receives over 2,000mm of rainfall annually — one of the highest in BC. This means exterior paint must be applied to properly prepared, dry surfaces and must be a premium product with excellent moisture resistance. We use Sherwin-Williams Duration and SuperPaint lines specifically because of their advanced moisture protection. Prep work is non-negotiable in Squamish: any failing paint, gaps, or exposed wood will absorb water and cause the new coating to fail within a season.
What time of year is best to paint a home exterior in Squamish?+
Late spring through early fall (May through September) is the ideal window for exterior painting in Squamish. We need temperatures above 10°C and at least 48 hours of dry weather after application. July and August offer the most reliable conditions. We do not recommend exterior painting in November through March due to the high rainfall and temperature fluctuations that prevent proper curing.
How long will exterior paint last in the Sea-to-Sky corridor?+
With premium products and proper prep, exterior paint on a Squamish or Whistler home typically lasts 7–10 years. Homes with significant sun exposure on south-facing walls, or those with cedar siding that wasn't properly primed, may need attention at 6–8 years. Our 2-year workmanship warranty covers any adhesion or application failures within the first two years.
Do you work in Whistler, Pemberton, and Brackendale as well as Squamish?+
Yes — Colour Craft Painting's Sea-to-Sky franchise covers the entire corridor from Squamish through Brackendale, Garibaldi Highlands, Britannia Beach, Whistler, and Pemberton. We regularly work on homes throughout the Sea-to-Sky region and are familiar with the specific challenges each area presents.
How do you handle difficult access on multi-storey homes in Garibaldi Highlands?+
Many homes in Garibaldi Highlands and Brackendale are built on sloped terrain with challenging ladder placements. Our crew is trained and equipped for difficult access situations — we use 40-foot extension ladders, pump jacks, and where required, boom lifts. We assess every access challenge during the estimate and price accordingly so there are no surprises on the job.
